OPPORTUNITIES for NEW STAFF and STAFF DEVELOPMENT
The Modernising Scientific Careers Scientific Training Programme (STP) is available in Ophthalmic and Visual Science. The STP is a 3 year fixed term, band 6 funded training post. IMPORTANT DEADLINE
·Next intake September 2013, but you need to apply by end August 2012! Who can apply
There are two ways
1)Direct entry: a pool of graduates with 2.1 or equivalent candidates apply for the training positions centrally advertised via New Scientist and Jobs.ac.uk. After on-line aptitude tests short listed candidates are interviewed, ratio 3:1 / place.
2)In service entry: with the written support of your department and Trust you may apply online for this STP place which is jointly sponsored by your Trust and SHA. You will be interviewed, but you will not be in competition for your existing substantive post. Your Trust must agree to release you from clinical duties for university training. How to get STP funding
1)Decide how many trainees your service needs (with workforce planning and HR): see http://www.nhsemployers.org/PlanningYourWorkforce/Modernising-Scientific-Careers/MSC/implementing-MSC/Pages/MSC-checklist.aspx
2)Identify and gain agreement of your Trust’s healthcare science lead or the HR link with your local SHA
3)They will add your requirement to the annual template: this circulates all scientific networks to collate numbers of trainees needed in every speciality
OR
4)Directly contact your regional SHA Lead Scientist (see below) and ask to be added to the scientific network
5)Your SHA (with all other SHAs) submit their regional lists to the Lead Education Commissioner for Science, NHS West Midlands
6) this central money hopefully then supports your trainee case.

Who to contact to find out more
Below there are e-mails addresses for
a)regional SHA contacts
b)professional advisors in each sub-speciality
You are strongly encouraged to make contact with them to join the scientific network
c)Barbara Lloyd, a Professional Advisor in Life Sciences, has kindly provided an explanatory PowerPoint presentation describing the new structures in scientist training and the web links you can follow to learn more about them.

Training Placements
Associated with STP training are rotational work based placements across the neurosensory disciplines: audiology; neurophysiology; and ophthalmic and visual science. Please consider if you can offer a 12 week experience that satisfies curriculum outcomes in ophthalmic and visual science: (http://www.networks.nhs.uk/nhs-networks/msc-framework-curricula/stp). There is an urgent need to identify placements for first year of audiology and neurophysiology STP trainees. Participation in this placement scheme may help you identify potential future scientists and also helps identify local neurophysiology or audiological placements for your trainee in the future.

Please contact your local professional advisor (from list) or Dr Richard Billings (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if you want to know more or think you may be able to help with placement.
