Visual electrophysiology courses:

BriSCEV course and conference: Held annually, moving around the UK and Ireland look at the BriSCEV website for details. BriSCEV has a competitive application for travel grants to support members attendance.

ISCEV course and conference: Held annually, rotating around the world see the ISCEV website for more details. ISCEV has a competitive application for travel grants to support attendance.

Moorfields Eye Hospital UCL clinical Electrophysiology of Vision course: An accredited virtual course delivered by world-renowned experts at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, many of whom you will know as active ISCEV and BriSCEV members and board members.  This course will feature live on-line lectures by an international faculty, interactive question and answer sessions and case discussions, with an option of an additional onsite practical day. Pre-recorded introductory lectures will cover topics such as anatomy, ophthalmic imaging and the clinical characteristics of genetic and acquired eye disease. Website: https://checkout.moorfields.nhs.uk/product?catalog=Clinical-Electrophysiology-of-Vision-2024

Visual Electrophysiology for Technicians: This course is designed to provide training in advanced functional visual assessments, to increase the reliability of test results globally and to ensure the implementation of ISCEV standards. This 6 week online course is available 100% online. Under the instruction of internationally recognised experts in visual electrophysiology, participants will advance their skills in functional visual assessments. Developed by experts from the University of Sydney and UCL. Endorsed by ISCEV.  Website https://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine-health/study-medicine-and-health/professional-development-and-short-courses/ophthalmology/visual-electrophysiology.html

e-learning for health: This is a free NHS course. To access it, and others, you need to register with e-Learning for Health. You will need a valid NHS email address to fully access the course – any address ending in nhs.uk or nhs.net should work.

Visit this page: http://portal.e-lfh.org.uk/ and click Register. You will need to enter your name, country and region, staff group, e.g. Clinical Scientist, grade and primary speciality, e.g. ophthalmology. Then you need to enter your start date; if you have been in post for more than a few months, it will be easier to click the text box and then click on the “X” that appears and manually enter the date rather than use the calendar. The format is e.g. DD Mmm YYYY. Then select your work address by entering the postcode. Selecting your workplace can be confusing as there may be several entries for the one address, each subtly different depending on which NHS services are based at the site. Then click “Register”.

Once you have logged on, select “View Full Catalogue” to see all the courses that are available to you. There are lots. Find and select “Ophthalmology (Eye Site)”, then select “Eye-Site 12 – Neurophysiology”. The available sessions will be listed. Select the “12_01 Introduction to Visual Electrophysiology” session, or whichever one you wish to start with.

Visual electrophysiology books:

For a list of books and chapters see the ISCEV website here https://iscev.wildapricot.org/links

Webvision – The Organisation of the Retina and Visual System. An online textbook with incredibly detailed information about the organisation of the retina and visual system written by experts in their field. https://webvision.med.utah.edu/

Visual electrophysiology journal:

Documenta Ophthalmologica: Documenta Ophthalmologica is the official journal of the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV). It advocates for the understanding and application of the clinical electrophysiology of vision. Many papers are open access including the ISCEV standards which are published here. ISCEV members have full access to the online contents of DOOP. To receive DOOP monthly contents via email please follow this link: www.springer.com/tocsubscription/10633

Eye: There has also been a special collection of visual electrophysiology papers in the journal Eye (2021) which are mostly open access.

International standards, guidelines, extended protocols and reference data:

Based on input from many members, ISCEV publishes compilations of protocols available here open access: https://iscev.wildapricot.org/standards

To support centres to use adequate quality reference data, ISCEV has collated some reference datasets as well as information on creating a reference data set: https://iscev.wildapricot.org/page-1075375

Public and Patient Involvement

There are many opportunities to get involved in in public and patient engagement, examples include:

  • ·       Inspiring the future Home - Inspiring The Future is a website that you can sign up to volunteer to provide talks or other careers information to schools about your role and the role of healthcare scientists. It allows you to specify the information you are able to give such as the subject/career area, and the area of the city you would be able to provide this for. Schools will then contact you through the website with opportunities they are providing their students such as careers talks/fairs and inspirational assemblies that you can become involved with.
  • ·       It is also possible to sign up to become a healthcare science or STEM ambassador here STEM Ambassadors. This network supports volunteers to bring real life examples of STEM careers into education settings across the UK by offering engaging activities to inspire the next generation.
  • ·       In2scienceUK work with STEM professionals to inspire and support disadvantaged young people to pursue degrees, apprenticeships and careers in STEM. It is possible to find out more and sign up to this programme here:  Volunteer with In2ScienceUK — Help to promote healthcare science to the public.
  • ·       Some hospitals will also have their own patient groups or volunteer groups where they encourage staff and students to sign up to help with patient engagement opportunities that they provide, sometimes involving the local or disease specific charities.
