
BriSCEV was founded in 2003 by Colin Barber (Chair) as the British chapter of ISCEV. David Keating (Secretary), Dorothy Thompson (Treasurer), Malcolm Brown (Education) and Graham Holder (Professional Liaison) formed the first Board. Tony Kriss was instrumental in improving education for visual electrophysiology but sadly died before the founding of BriSCEV (obituary here). Vivien Thorpe edited the newsletter before the Board role of Communications Officer was taken up by David Sculfor and Vikki McBain joined to support the Education officer.
BriSCEV is a small society with far-reaching influence in Ophthalmic and Vision Science. It runs a dynamic annual meeting attracting clinicians, scientists and technicians from across the UK and western Europe. Details of previous meetings can be accessed via the links below. BriSCEV travel grant recipients 2025: Isaamuddin Alvi, 'Receiving the BriSCEV travel grant to attend ISCEV 2025 was a genuinely transformative experience. As someone earlier in my career, the opportunity to attend an international conference of that calibre felt out of reach until this award made it possible. Being able to present my work orally to an international audience for the first time was both a professional milestone and a real confidence boost. The connections I made and the research I was exposed to broadened my perspective. I'm proud to say that the experience contributed to a stronger portfolio, and I have since been offered a place on ST1 ophthalmology training. I genuinely believe that the BriSCEV grant played a part in getting me there.' Laura Milner, 'Receiving a BriSCEV travel grant for ISCEV 2025 was really helpful in enabling me to attend the meeting as it would not have been possible for me to obtain the funding to do this locally. It gave me the opportunity to present a case study and I received very useful feedback and discussion from colleagues with a range of backgrounds and experience about this, this was valuable both for the specific case presented and more broadly for my own development. I think one of the main benefits of attending ISCEV is the opportunity to meet people from the wider international visual electrophysiology community and learning how different centres approach similar challenges. It is useful not only for building connections, but also for understanding different ways of working, comparing experiences, and picking up ideas that you might not otherwise come across within your own department. For me, this has had a practical impact beyond the meeting itself, conversations at the ISCEV meeting contributed to work that has developed into local service improvement projects this year, and it highlighted how valuable these meetings can be in creating collaborations and moving ideas forward. For anyone considering applying, I would definitely encourage it, whatever your level of experience or background, as the benefits of attending the meeting have extended well beyond the few days of the conference itself!'
